Personal installation

Opening Andreas Gursky / Sprüth Magers Gallery Berlin

During the course of an exhibition opening eight uniformly dressed people position themselves in a closed orthogonal system and remain standing in this position until the end of the event. Their respective orientation is passed on to the neighbouring person. Initially they appear as a single irritating manifestation. The more the space empties over time, the more visible the structure of the personal installation becomes, following the principle of corresponding reversal to the exhibition opening (the more exhibition visitors are in the space, the less able one is to perceive the personal system, likewise the fewer the people in the space, the more apparent the system is), finally dissolving with the last of the visitors. It could be one and the same person appearing eight times in the space, a form of replication which toys with its local and social systems.
